Living with Schizophrenia
Family and friends play a major role in the rehabilitation of people with schizophrenia. Warm and loving support can make all the difference in the recovery process, but no one should pretend that living with schizophrenia is easy. Dealing with the person’s hallucinations and delusions is especially hard. The family should never play along with his delusions, otherwise, they risk confirming his false ideas. When the patient experiences delusions or becomes aggressive, it is best not to argue with him or to provoke him in any way. Sometimes, a doctor, counselor, or psychiatrist may need to be summoned, or the patient should be taken to a hospital for treatment. However, threats to do so should only be used as a last resort, when absolutely necessary. If the family members are rejective of and hostile towards the patient, recovery is more difficult. Almost as bad is if the family is overly involved or highly critical of the patient, expecting too much too soon. What is needed is the right balance to help the patient live a more or less normal life again, which is not necessarily the balance that existed before he became ill. With love, understanding, and patience, you can overcome the afflictions of this unpredictable mental illness together.
